The History of Kenmore

The Gateway to Loch Tay

About our village

Nestled at the eastern end of Loch Tay, the charming village of Kenmore is one of Highland Perthshire’s true gems. With its whitewashed cottages, stone bridge, and stunning backdrop of mountains and water, Kenmore offers visitors a peaceful retreat steeped in natural beauty and Scottish heritage.

Founded in the 16th century as part of the Taymouth Castle estate, the village retains much of its traditional character. The elegant Kenmore Hotel, dating back to 1572, claims to be Scotland’s oldest inn and the iconic Kenmore Kirk which was re-built in 1760, following the first church , which was built on the site in 1579, by Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy, as a replacement parish church for the medieval church at Inchadney.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Kenmore is a gateway to adventure. The calm waters of Loch Tay invite kayaking, paddleboarding, and boat cruises, while the surrounding hills offer excellent opportunities for walking, cycling, and wildlife watching. The Falls of Acharn, a short hike from the village, reveal a dramatic cascade hidden in a wooded gorge – which can be viewed from the Hermit’s Cave.

Nearby attractions include the Scottish Crannog Centre, a fascinating reconstruction of an ancient loch-dwelling community that brings Scotland’s prehistoric past to life, and Highland Safaris– combining exhilarating Land Rover Safaris, scenic boat trips of Loch Tay, popular Red Deer Centre and Perthshire’s only Gold and Gem Panning Centre.

Whether you’re seeking relaxation by the water, scenic photography, or a base to explore Highland Perthshire, Kenmore combines history, tranquility, and adventure in one enchanting village.
